Particularly in worn state, the 1838 Coronet Head Large Cent is a rather frequent coin. But, particularly in whole red hue, it might be limited to better condition. Minted during the Coronet Head series (1816-1839), this is early American money. Here is a more thorough examination:
Key Elements: Relief also adds the word “LIBERTY.” Produced in large numbers, the 1838 Coronet Head Large Cent resulted in several die marriages—that is, combinations of obverse and reverse dies. Though not very different, there are slight variations among dies that collectors may spot; Newcomb gave 15 die marriages. Considered scarce are some varieties—N-9 and N-14; later discoveries N-15 and N-16 are rare. PCGS claims to have proof specimens of the 1838 Coronet Head Large Cent; many of them have long lineages. Though certain specimens display sporadic weakness in the obverse stars, generally 1838 Proofs have great strike quality. Proofs are mostly brown; they have just vestiges of their original mint hue.
