1828 Classic Head Half Cent 1/2C NGC AU55BN
The mintage figure for half cents coined during 1828 is believed to have included some pieces struck from 1826-dated dies. In addition, a large percentage of the 1829 deliveries is believed to have included 1828-dated half cents.
Two die marriages are known for 1828 half cents, having the normal 13 stars. C-1 is slightly more scarce overall, and this is true especially of Mint State pieces. Variety C-3 has benefited from the Collins hoard, a group of about 1,000 unworn half cents that surfaced in 1894 and was dispersed in small groups over the next several decades. This source accounts for the many 1828 half cents displaying mint red color but with spotting and staining.
